Loyola University Chicago’s (LUC) International Film & Media Studies program is sponsoring a panel on Women and Documentary Film, Wed. Feb. 29th, 7-9 PM, Information Commons, 4th floor.
Documentary filmmakers Ruth Leitman, Danielle Beverly, Bren Murphy and Elizabeth Coffman will discuss the challenges and rewards of independent documentary filmmaking.
Ruth Leitman’s films “Alma” , “Lipstick & Dynamite”, “Wildwood, NJ” have screened at the Whitney Biennial and won multiple awards. Her latest, “Tony & Janina’s American Wedding” is about the immigration crisis in this country and has already been instrumental in political advocacy efforts to change how immigrant families are legally separated from each other. Read about Ruth here: http://ruthlessfilms.com/about/
Danielle Beverly, currently teaching at Marquette, was just at Sundance last year for a documentary that she served as field producer on–Project Rebirth. Her documentary feature, “Learning to Swallow” premiered at Silverdocs. Danielle is currently finishing a social issue documentary on a community in Georgia.
Bren Murphy’s first documentary, “A Question of Habit,” co-produced with Loyola’s Gannon Center, is about the history of women religious in popular culture. The film screened at the New York Film festival and just aired on WTTW in Chicago. Bren, an LUC faculty member, has also produced radio documentaries.
Elizabeth Coffman will moderate the discussion. Her latest documentary, “Veins in the Gulf,” an environmental look at Louisiana’s disappearing coastline, is currently screening around the country.
