4/22 – Good Friday at Broadview

This morning, Good Friday, like every Friday, concerned citizens, faith based supporters and others gathered at the Broadview detention center just outside Chicago to pray for those facing deportation, their families and for all of us, really.

Today’s crowd was larger than normal, as Broadview is about to get a face lift and wont be the last stop for those about to be deported until the work on the building is complete.  Tony’s attorney Royal Berg was on hand as he always is (he was one of the originators of the gathering 4+ years ago), as was Tony, and led the crowd in prayer, both in english and in spanish.

Attorney Royal Berg leads the Broadview prayer vigil

As the prayers were said, the buses start rolling, taking loved ones away to an uncertain fate at the hands of our current broken immigration system.  As we saw the back of the buses pulling out, we saw them suddenly slow to a stop.  Relatives of those being removed had taken matters into their own hands, at least for a short time.

Protestors at Broadview

In the pouring rain, about a 1/2 dozen people blocked the road by laying down in front of the buses.  Chanting, those on the ground were being asked to move by uniformed police on the scene.  TV cameras and hand held camera phones captured the scene.  Those on the buses clicked on the windows to let us know they were witnessing the protest, thou we couldnt see into the buses as the window are covered over so you cant look in.  A man with a cross held it up in protest.

Good Friday at Broadview 4/22/2011

As the police removed the protesters from the street as other chanted, Director Ruth Leitman was in the area walking nearby.  A uniformed police officer grabbed her arm unexpectedly, dragging her along as if to arrest her.  She was able to break free of his clutches.

As the crowd walked on and the event ended, the buses rolled out of Broadview, and we all headed back to our cars with a deep sadness, but an iron will to continue working to draw attention to our broken immigration system that deports 1100 people a DAY, and over 400,000 people each year.
